Galaxy S: Top 5 ICS Roms

Being an iPhone user for serveral years, my switch to Android was not that easy. I had many remarks and didn’t like the way some apps look on Android. What have changed my mind and made me to love Android is community and the ability to change every single thing that you don’t like on your phone. With the new release, ICS or 4.x , Google has moved forward in UI and UX so much that you want to lick your phone like it is a real ice cream sandwich :) . It has almost been three months since Google released its first Android 4.0.1 source code version to the public, and since then, rom kichens are working 24/7 to bring the best ICS experience to your phones. As a owner of Samsung Galaxy S, I just had to get rid of the rubbish stock software that was almost never updated and flash some custom ICS goodness :) Here is my top 5 ICS roms currently avaible for Galaxy S and little description of them.

  1. Team ICSSGS RC4.2 – Android 4.0.3
Earlier known as Onecosmic’s rom, this is the most mature rom in mine opinion and with most features that work out of the box. I have been using it as my main rom since day one and I didn’t have any problems so far. Battery life is very good even with the Android OS reporting/drainage bug still hunting 4.0.3 roms. Overall performance is good, but not “oh-wow” with the stock kernel, so I recommend that you flash Semaphore or Devil kernel over it to get real performance boost.
  2. Slim ICS 2.8 – Android 4.0.3
This rom is soooo cool that you will fall in love with it. Its blasing fast, doesn’t have bloatware, has all the tweeks integrated ( battery percentage and power control mod ) and its only about 70 mb big! I have used it for week or so, and was very pleased, but some issues with copying over usb and minor bugs made me go back looking for other roms and wait for updates on this one. Also, I would like to mention devs enthusiasm, as he updates this rom and replies on the forum thread almost daily. Overall, if you like performance and don’t wont stock bloatware, go for this one, you wont regret it!
  3. Teamhacksung CM9 – Android 4.0.3
Team hacksung has been porting ICS to Galaxy S from day one and it is the most talked about rom around. It is CM9 alpha for SGS and its ultra smooth with very good battery life and nice support for SGS features. I put it on the third spot because I had little problems with phone sensors and camera app, but its ok for daily use. Probably, one day I will use it as my daily rom because I am a big fan of CM roms and most of the custom roms are based on this one, with only difference between are polished features. Also, you can use any ICS kernel with it, modified it and even compile your own build, they are fully open source!
  4. Dark Knight 2.1 – Android 4.0.4
This is the first rom with android 4.0.4 version, and it doesn’t have battery Android OS bug like other 4.0.3 roms have. It is pretty stable, fast and comes with two launchers, stock and Nova pimped one. Because it is a port, and not build from the source that Google released, it has some minor bugs here and there, but nothing serios except the usb copy problem that i mentioned earlier on other roms. Hoping to see some bugs fixed in future versions and maybe I will give it another try.
  5. Android Open Kang Project – Android 4.0.3
AOKP is a really big project like CM that is porting ICS to all devices that can support it. Because of that, they do not have time to fix every little bug for every device out there, and thats why i don’t use it as my daily rom, but five stars for the effort. Also, when I fix my broken glass Galaxy Tab 10.1 , I will surely flash this rom on it no matter what works or not, want that ICS goodness on the TAB!

As you can see, there is a way to update and refresh your old 2.x.x Galaxy S with the new ICS and use it everyday without any big problems :) I am really happy with the speed, looks and battery life on ICS so good job Google and all you dev’s for bringing better things to my android experience!
